SeasonsWe fish specific areas at the peak time of year to take advantage of the best tarpon fishing on the Western Yucatan. Spring Season March 28 Thru May 2 2012During the spring season we concentrate on the Biosphere Los Petenes, north of Campeche. We are booking trips for Spring 2012.
Fall Season September 19 Thru October 31Tarpon Hunter's Fall Season is a two destination trip. You'll fish both the Biosphere Los Petenes and the Rio Champoton, 90 Kilometers south of Campeche. This is the most productive time of year to fly fish tarpon on the Western Yucatan.
Summer SeasonWe are now booking for our summer season. We have found consistant fishing for tarpon, from 10 to 40 pounds, also extremely good fishing for big snook on the fly. We base out of Frontera, in Tobasco State and are concentrating on the river Grialva. Please contact Steve for more info 970.692.1048. Trip Dates June 5 thru. August 28
Biosphere Los PetenesAfter landing at the Merida Airport, a new English speaking facility and clearing customs, you will be met by Steve Campbell. Tarpon Hunters will immediately head south to the city of Campeche where you will dine at one of the many fine restaurants in Campeche. If you're a night person you can explore the many sights in this historic city, or just relax at your hotel. Tarpon Hunters will meet you in the dining room the next morning around 5:30 am for breakfast, and take you to the marina where the boats are moored for a daylight departure. Fish for as long as you like in a wide variety of habitats, ranging from turtle grass flats which are 2 to 6 feet deep, to mangrove edges and rivers. You will experience extremely challenging tarpon fishing in the tidal creeks in and around the mangroves. Almost all of the fishing in the Biosphere is sight fishing; Tarpon Hunters fish from Pongas as the bottom is too soft for wading. You'll have lunch on the boat, and then when you're ready, you'll return to the Ocean View for a well deserved rest by the pool. If the tides are right; Tarpon Hunters will take you out for a couple hours in the evening. After the second day of fishing we'll head south approximately 1 hour to the Rio Champoton.
Rio ChampotonThe Rio Champoton is a slow moving, winding river, that runs out from the depths of the Mayan Jungle. I've seen this river jam packed with baby tarpon in the fall. The trip upriver can range from 15 to 45 minutes depending on where the fish are concentrated. It's possible you'll see flocks of parrots, flamingos and other interesting bird life. You'll be casting into boiling schools of Tarpon, and blind casting into areas of concentrated fish. The Tarpon are chasing sardines that are moving upriver and the fishing can be intense. You can fish until the heat of the day puts the fish down. We'll have lunch on the river and return to your hotel until the evenings fishing. After the evenings fishing you'll dine at the restaurant in your hotel. We'll fish the river for the next three days on this schedule. When fishing the Rio Champoton, you'll be staying at the Tucan Sihoplaya located approximately 15 miles north of Champoton. Enjoy breakfast on the back deck of the restaurant Boca Del Rio around 5:30 a.m. Tarpon Hunter's chef will do the cooking as there are no restaurants open at this early hour. At daylight you'll board your boat for a day of fishing.
SnookSnook can also be taken on the Rio Champoton by dredging deep with Liviathon Sinking Fly Lines or working the edges of the River with orange tarpon flies. Spin fishermen can troll deep with Rapalas for these hard fighting fish.
Non-Fishing CompanionsThe city of Campeche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its Mayan and Spanish Ancestry. Guided tours of the city are available on foot or by van. There are many Mayan sites near Campeche including the pyramid of Edsna which is only an hour from your hotel. You can visit military forts built in the late 1700's to protect the city from pirates. The church of San Francisco was built using colonial architecture in the 16th century as the city center. You can also walk along the Malecon that borders the bay and enjoy the many statues scattered along the way. Locally made handcrafts can be found at the market. Eco Tours are available by boat, exploring the Biosphere Los Petenes. Or you can just relax by the pool at your hotel. Whatever your choice, Tarpon Hunter's will assist you with your excursions throughout your stay.
