Rigging up for Baby Tarpon on the Western Yucatan
We cater to fly fishermen and spin fishermen alike.
Fly Fishing GearWe recommend a 9', 8 wt. rod for baby tarpon. If you don't have an 8 wt., a 9 wt. is good. A comparable reel that will hold 100 yards or more of 20 lb backing with a good drag system. We are using 9', 8 wt. 4-piece Sage Xi3 for our house rods with Abel Super 7 reels. This combination is perfect for our tarpon fisheries.
LinesYou'll want a weight forward, tropical floating line. Lee Wulff makes a Bermuda Triangle Taper that's perfect for the job. Bring an extra line in case one is damaged. Tarpon Hunter's staff uses a sink-tip setup on the rivers we fish. You'll catch more fish. Rio Products makes sink tips (15') with a built on loop. Type 6 is the best!
LeadersYou need one type of leader for baby tarpon, a 30 lb fluorocarbon for your butt section and shock tippet and 10 lb (stiff) mono for your class tippet. This is how you put it together
Tarpon FliesYou can bring a bunch, but these will do:
You can find the flies at:
Fly Fishing Knots
Spin GearTarpon Hunters uses 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 ft. fast action spin rods with a reel that will hold 100 to 150 yards of 10 lb Monofilament. We have had deadly results using 3" swimbaits for tarpon in numerous color schemes. You'll also need jig heads in 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 oz sizes, red, yellow and white. You can find these at the fisherman's landing saltwater tackle shop - http://www.saltwatertackle.com Order Codes:
